Thanks to Shannon for this information about Red Robin Restaurants and the great tip about Chipotle (mostly) dumping soy:
I had a good experience at Red Robin in Mesa tonight. Their website is awesome! They have a tool where you enter in your allergies and it gives you which items are safe! Then at the restaurant, they have a binder separated into the big eight that tells you what you can eat, or how to adjust an item so that you can eat it. I am doing the Wahls Protocol for MS so I have to avoid a lot of things! The waiter also asked me exactly what all I need to avoid. Great service!
I just contacted them about their mayo and salad dressings that they list as safe for soy allergies. This was the response I received:
“I did speak with the head of our food safety team and the head of our allergy program as well. I brought them your concern regarding our allergy menu stating that our Mayo, and other dressings, are safe to consume for those with a soy allergy. However, when you pull up the ingredients list, the first ingredient listed is “Soybean Oil”. They did inform me that our mayo, fryer oil, our dressings and some sauces are all made with highly refined oils. All refined soy oil have the allergen/protein removed during the refining process and, per the FDA, highly refined oils are not considered allergenic. These are safe for our Guest who are avoiding soy, either due to a restriction or an allergy. “
Hi Jody,
Thanks for the information. You’re “enjoying” the situation that caused me to write “Just tell me if there’s soy in it”. It just blows my mind that after all of these decades we can’t get reliable information about the food we eat.
I love Red Robin and the few times I eat out, I tend to eat there. However, on their allergen menu, they do not note that their mayo is made with soy, so be aware of that. They do tell you when they use soy oil in their fryers, so that is helpful. I have found that there are many burgers I can eat there, if I ask them to hold the mayo.
