Twizzlers Watermelon Pull ‘n’ Peel

Not to rehash my “just tell me if there’s soy in it” rant, but we just got a Twizzlers Watermelon Pull ‘n’ Peel candy handed to our kids at a parade. The wrapper says “Allergy Information: Contains WHEAT and SULFITES.”. Which as you all know for those of us with soy allergies, that doesn’t tell us anything useful.

So, whip out the ol’ smart phone and start researching. Interestingly enough, Hershey’s website does list the ingredients for Twizzlers Black Licorice — and they contain soy lecithin. If you keep digging you can find the page for Twizzlers Watermelon Pull ‘n’ Peel, but in a stunning lack of consistency, no ingredients are listed. I finally find the twizzlers watermelon ingredients listed on the snack site  “Sincerely Nuts“. Thanks Hershey for making that easy.

“Sincerely Nuts” reports these ingredients for Twizzlers watermelon Pull ‘n’ Peel: Corn Syrup, Flour, Sugar, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Glyceryl Monostearate, Salt, Citric Acid, Cornstarch, Glycerin, Artificial Flavoring, Potassium Sorbate (a Preservative) and Artificial Coloring (Includes Red 40).

So not only soybean oil, but partially hydrogenated soybean oil.

Time to discover this: 6 minutes. Had it been listed on the wrapper: 1.5 seconds.

Not to sound like an allergy snob, but “Sulfites”? When did those start getting listed? Just from the mere fact that I’ve never seen Sulfites listed as one of the top allergens (how’s that for a scientific study?) why are they tying up valuable wrapper space with Sulfites instead of Soy. Whether or not the National Institute of Health is correct about soybean oil, it still doesn’t change the fact that THERE’S SOY IN IT.
