Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen fries in LARD! :)

Apparently something has changed in the last two years. Read the comments below, as this information seems to be outdated now

According to Sonia, they’re using vegetable oil, but 5 days earlier Patti says “beef tallow”

Popeyes’ fries the way things are supposed to be fried, in LARD! None of this we-pretend-to-be-healthy-but-really-crazy-bad-for-you soybean oil. Give me honest lard over solvent-extracted soybean oil any day — regardless of the allergies!

When we first started reviewing their menu, we figured they were just playing the same game that KFC plays by claiming that since it’s ONLY fried in soybean oil, it doesn’t contain soy. We must have seemed extremely incredulous since the employee then brought out a big ol’ box of lard to show us what they actually fry in.

My kids have gotten to eat their first fried chicken since we’ve learned about their soybean allergies. It  was our 3 year old daughter’s first taste of fried chicken in her life!

Even better! They roll their corn on the cob in real, honest to goodness, butter — the milk and salt as the only ingredients type of butter, none of that really-it’s-better-for-you-but-it’s-mainly-just-cheaper-for-us margarine.

Our kids are in heaven, fried chicken and corn on the cob — our kids are the only kids in America that are tired of McDonald’s because so far that’s been one of the few fast-food restaurants where we can actually get a meal for them.

One warning, Popeye’s nutrition / allergy information isn’t 100% correct. The Cajun fries are supposed to be soy-free, but there is actually soybean oil in them. Everything else seemed to be accurate.

The chicken (not the nuggets) and the corn is about all they can have — the mashed potatoes, the fried shrimp, the onion rings, pretty much everything else has soy in it, but we’ll take what we can get.

Extra thanks to the ever helpful Robert and company who made multiple trips to check ingredients. It was their watchful eye that caught the soybean oil in the Cajun fries. At that point I was ready to take the allergen information at face value (They had me at “lard”) but they were still checking thing even when we weren’t asking.

So, if you have a soybean allergy, stop by the Popeyes in Seville say “Hi!” to Robert and company, they’ll take care of you.

    • Hi Douglas,
Definitely not claiming any health benefits of lard, but I’d rather eat minimally processed lard over the who-knows-what-they-do-to-it soybean oil.

I don’t know if there are any lard allergies, but we’re kind of focused on the soy allergies over here.

  1. Just called my local Popeye’s after calling the headquarters and they said that they use vegetable oil. . I was hoping for lard and even let them know that but they said that they use vegetable oil. Drats.

  2. I was told at the Popeye’s restaurant in Manassas, VA, they use “beef tallow” for all their frying, which is different than lard (from pork).

  3. I was pleased to try Popeye’s for the first time today – when I asked about oil I was told “animal fats”. I thought for sure they were lying to me (or misunderstanding), but nope. This is awesome!

  4. Lard comes from pigs. What about the people who don’t eat pork. We all know that swine meat is worse than anything else you can eat. Pigs were never meant to be consumed. The purposes of the pig is to clean the earth. I heard that they cooked their chicken in late. Thanks to this I know it true.

  5. The biscuits at Popeye’s have soybean oil in them. It’s in the buttery stuff on top. Just had a major reaction to a Popeye’s biscuit, and went to their website to check ingredients. The “dressing” on top of the biscuit lists soybean oil as the first ingredient. No wonder my throat started closing up.

  6. Don’t you realize canola is poison as well. It’s an acronym. Canadian oil canola. Originally farmed for a heating oil not meant for human consumption. Causes cancer. Real name is rapeseed. Canola goes through a chemical processing where it is altered and made somewhat digestible. It is not ur saving grace but a lie sold to you by our government. They are thinning the population.

  7. Your kids eat at McDonald’s where almost everything has soy in it? Thanks for saying the cajun fries have soy oil. Now I know what makes me sick when I eat there. I also can’t eat at McDonald’s because even the buns have soy!

    • Hi Freebird,
Pretty much all commercially available bread has soybean oil in it. It’s a chore to get food for the kids to eat at McDonald’s, but it’s a chore we’ve had plenty of practice with: No fries, no buns, no sauces except ketchup, no american cheese, bring your own bread.

  8. If you are ever in Los Angeles, there are 2 boutique burger places – Umami Burger (multiple locations) and Fusion Burger (in Highland Park section of Los Angeles) that fry in beef tallow. Heaven. Fries, onion rings and Fusion Burger in addition has these addictive little nuggets of cheese and potato called “Tosas”. Just wonderful! Also, Knott’s Berry Farm fries in Canola Oil and their fried chicken is legendary.

    • Hi Shannon,
Our son doesn’t seem to have an intolerance to MSG. I read the ingredient list on the chicken, and it didn’t seem that there was any soy in the chicken itself. What did I miss?
