Chipotle is (for all intents and purposes) Soy Free!!!!

Thanks to Angela for reminding me of the wonderful news: Chipotle is finally (mostly) Soy Free! We were in a Chipotle a couple of weeks ago and were pleasantly surprised to find out Chipotle now uses canola oil in their tortillas. That makes everything we care about 100% soy free at Chipotle. They do ?now? ?still? offer a tofu concoction as an alternative to meat, but if it’s been there for a while, I’ve just ignored it.

So the tofu concoction is the only thing with soy in it in the entire restaurant. Our son was so ecstatic to finally be able to eat a Chipotle burrito again. It was one of his favorite restaurants before we found out about his soy allergy, and now he gets to go back!

I'm trying to track allergen information for every restaurant that we eat at. With my son's soy allergy, each time we eat at a restaurant, it can take up to 30 minutes to figure out what he can eat. Especially since most restaurants don't accurately represent their usage of soy.

Finally, Chipotle seems to be (mostly) soy-free

Special thanks to Kim and Shannon, who shared the good news with me. Shannon says:

It seems they have changed that chart within the past month or so. I was looking up restaurants when planning our trip to Phoenix and saw the disclaimer about soy oil. I write the company and asked exactly which items had it and if it was used when preparing the food, could I ask for it not to be used. They wrote right back and told me it was just the flour tortillas. Now I see the chart had been updated. Their message was so fast and friendly, I was impressed! Now if only I could get my in-laws to take me there while I am visiting!

I hope your kid is happy to go back to Chipotle!!! And thanks for your blog!

Well, it looks like the good news may be (mostly) true. It looks like Chipotle is dumping the soybean oil. Before us soy-sensitive people feel too warm and fuzzy about it, apparently it was dropped due to the GMO nature of most soybeans, not because of all of the poor unfortunate souls that couldn’t consume soy. But, hey, we’ll take it — our son hasn’t been able to eat at chipotle since he was 4, so he’s ecstatic.

According to this page, look down the right hand column for the box titled “GMOs”, they’re switching their fryers to sunflower oil instead of soybean oil. Now, searching for “soy” on that same page, shows that there’s still soybean oil in the Flour Tortillas (Burrito-size) and (Taco-size), but if all we have to do is carry in our own tortillas, our son will still be in heaven.

Visiting Chipotle’s official allergen page, shows updated and non-conflicting information. This page, too, lists only the tortillas as a source of soybean oil. Wouldn’t it be awesome if Chipotle were the first nationwide restaurant chain to completely banish soy from their menus?

Chipotle, I’m confused

Well, that was a semi false positive last November. Now I’m just confused.

Before I get into it, I do want to give kudos to Chipotle for at least having the decency of telling us if there’s soybean oil in their food. As you can see on the chart, they at least mark in a different color items that “merely” contain soybean oil. (If you’ve read this blog for more than 2 minutes, you’ve probably already seen my rant about “Just tell me if there’s soy in it“). So thank you Chipotle.

Now here’s where it gets confusing. I finally had an opportunity to take my kids to Chipotle as at least the Carnitas were supposed to be OK according to their ingredient listings,

but then, here’s where it gets weird: Their allergen chart, shows that “all meats” contain soybean oil:

So now I’m baffled. Unfortunately I’m usually only at a Chipotle at lunchtime, so there is roughly 734 people in line behind me, so I’m not going to risk the wrath of other Chipotle-philes to ask this question. If anybody reading this can find out the answer before me, please, please let me know.

Hey, my kids can eat the Carnitas at Chipotle

Wow! Since I first researched Chipotle almost two years ago, it now seems that the carnitas doesn’t have soybean oil in them. I may actually be able to take my son back to my favorite restaurant. Yay!

Chipotle

Amazingly, everthing at Chipotle but the sour cream and cheese contains soy. I would have never guessed that in a million years. With Chipotle’s “food with integrity” mindset, I figured there wouldn’t be a lick of soy or soybean oil anywhere to be found in their restaurants.

Thank you Chipotle for having the decency to list soybean oil as being a soy product!
